CO2 EMISSIONS’ REDUCTION

CO2 EMISSIONS’ REDUCTION: IMPROVEMENT OF HUMAN AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a natural component of the air we breathe; it is a colorless, odorless and non-flammable gas produced by metabolic processes (such as respiration) and by the combustion of fossil fuels.

It is useful for the growth of plants and for the production of food that we find on our tables every day but in high concentrations it represents a risk for the human being, the natural environment that surrounds us and the plants themselves.

It is now known that CO2 is a greenhouse gas responsible for global warming; in high concentrations the gas jeopardizes the ozone layer present in the atmosphere that protects the earth from the harmful action of ultraviolet UV-C rays and is responsible for the formation of a "hood" that prevents the expulsion of the heat absorbed by the earth during the day.
This is why in recent years when we expose ourselves to the sun we risk getting burned.

A high increase in CO2 causes acidification of the blood with a compensatory increase in the frequency and depth of breathing. After prolonged exposure to high levels, acid-base regulation can occur through renal mechanisms that can influence the metabolism of calcium in the bones. In addition, headaches, dizziness, irritation of the mucous membranes, difficulty in concentrating may occur.

In industrialized countries, most of the electricity is produced using fossil fuels, this involves the production of large quantities of carbon dioxide.

High CO2 levels, as already mentioned above, not only affect the ecosystem but also the foods that we have on our tables every day.

A recent study conducted by Harvard T.H. The Chan School of Public Health in Boston and the Harvard University Center for the Environment in Cambridge states that high CO2 emissions cause the reduction of important nutrientssuch as iron, zinc and proteins in some foods with consequences on people's health.

The study estimated that by 2050, 175 million people will be zinc deficient and 122 million will be protein deficient worldwide.

This phenomenon can lead to the weakening of the immune defenses and an increase in the risk of the formation of major diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

The United Nations Organization (UN) in the goals of the 2030-2050 agenda underline the importance of CO2 emissions reduction.

The air handling units and rooftops are the components of the building that have the greatest impact on energy consumption and the production of waste that is harmful to the environment. The adoption of an obsolete filtration system only increases their impact.

The choice of a cutting-edge filter media is essential.

The active electronic filters of Expansion Electronic represent the most valid alternative for the reduction of CO2 emissions and to stay in line with the new international goals.
The
FE/FEL SYSTEM filters in a single product are able to guarantee an almost total elimination of waste production(built with regenerable and recyclable materials) and with their low and constant pressure drops they guarantee a high and constant energy saving.

The FE/FEL SYSTEM can be implemented in new and existing systems thanks to the ASHARAE standard dimensions and their adaptability.

The estimated energy saving with the mere replacement of the obsolete filter media with Expansion Electronic filters is around 30%.
In retrofit projects in which the customer proceeds with the upgrade of the fan unit and with the optimization of the operating cycle, energy savings can even reach 80%.

AIR PURIFIERS & SANITIZERS

Air purifiers and sanitizers

Air purifiers and sanitizers equipped with active electrostatic filtration and negative ionization are able to guarantee air purification and at the same time hygienic, antibacterial and antiviral effects.

Electrostatic filtration is a well-known technology that uses high voltage and ionization fields to capture particles and microorganisms from the airflow, aka electrostatic precipitators (ESP).

ESPs bases its functioning on electric fields and electrostatic forces applied directly on particles and on microorganisms present in the air.

The filtration operation in the device develops in two phases:
- the conferring of an electric charge to particles and microorganisms carried by the air
- the electrostatic precipitation of charged particles/microorganisms.

The electrostatic filter is therefore built with two separate sections:
- an ionizing section
- a collection/precipitation section.

In the first phase particles’ and microorganisms’ (i.e. bacteria, spores, yeasts) charging takes place in the ionization section through electrodes generating a positive or negative corona discharge. In the second phase, the electrostatic precipitation of the previously charged particles and microbes, occurs in the collection section, on a set of parallel electrically charged collecting plates. The electric field generated between these plates captures the particles and traps them on the collection plate’s surface.

The contact with the plates causes the immediate destruction of any micro-organism and avoids the release of endotoxins when bacteria are lysed as happens with mechanical filters.

The main advantages of the Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs) are the followings:
- collect particles from 0.01 µm to 100 µm up to 99% efficiency
- operate at high flow rates (for example Monolite reaches 5.100 m3/h)
- operate at high particle loadings, 500 grams/m3
- have low energy consumption and low running costs
- there are no replacement and disposal costs

The electrostatic filtration technologies also show specific advantages when applied to the air decontamination of critical areas in nosocomial environments where airborne diseases are often spread. The efficiency of air filtration is high enough to collect particles of any size, including ultrafine particles. The destruction of microbes is thus managed effectively, and the system is also able to remove Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

The usefulness of ESP technology in mitigating biological aerosols has been demonstrated using both bacterial endospores and various bacterial species. This technology destroys the microorganisms transported by air flows before they risk becoming contaminants for human being. ESP are considered for this reason as an “active kill filtration”. As it does not allow microbes, fungi or spores to vegetate and

flourish on the filter’s surface while also preventing the emission of substances in the environment arising from metabolism and destruction of the captured microbiological flora.

Filtration with mechanical fiber filters is a technology which presents many gaps: the quality and quantity of clean air decrease over time, the filters get clogged causing an increase in pressure drops, noise and energy consumption, together with a laborious change of filters, becoming a non-economic solution in the long run. Furthermore, HEPA filters which are usually used in traditional air purifiers are effective only up to 0.3 µm, excluding thus viruses and micro-toxins.

Literature and laboratory tests confirm the effect of electronic filters against viruses which move in airborne particles. Atmospheric particulate acts as a carrier for many chemical and biological contaminants, including viruses. Regarding their spread in the population, there is a solid scientific literature which correlates the cases of viral infection with atmospheric particulate concentrations such as PM10 and PM2.5. Since even the ultra-fine PM1 particulate (with dimensions between 0.3 and 1 micron, according to the EN ISO 16890 standard) falls within the abatement field of Expansion Electronic electronic filters, they are effective against airborne viruses.

The failure to release the particulate and the particles captured and deposited on the electrostatic filter, when the switching off of the air purifier or of the filter itself occurs, is tested and certified by the University of Lucerne. This guarantee also makes the maintenance phase safer, which consists in washing the filter with water and detergent.

Moreover, since the filter is completely regenerable through washing, further replacement and disposal costs are avoided, ensuring a great economic saving over the time.

The capture and inactivation of airborne viruses by electrostatic precipitators have been studied on several occasions. Here below some interesting articles:

(Department of Energy, n.d.)

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19731701

(Ayse Fidan Altun, n.d.)

(Park, n.d.) http://large.stanford.edu/courses/2017/ph240/park2/

The elimination and inactivation of airborne viruses and bacteria also prevents the generation of dangerous outbreaks.

Mechanical filters in fact act as a breeding ground for microbes. Toxic microbial metabolites can pass through the filter, consequently the air which comes out is contaminated and the result can be lethal.

High efficiency air filtration (HEPA) can be used to remove airborne particles of biological origin (e.g. bioaerosols) in many indoor environments, including hospitals, office buildings and aircraft cabins.

However, even if it is always installed after pre filtration systems, this type of filter can also become an ideal habitat for viruses and bacteria.

Expansion Electronic air purifiers have different fields of application: they are in fact installed in homes, offices, shops, bars, restaurants, hairdressers and beauticians' salons, gyms, hotels, conference rooms, shopping centers, hospitals, rest homes, dental laboratories, airports.

They are not ozone generators. Ozone generators can be very harmful for human health. Ozone can cause health effects after inhalation.

Symptoms such as mucous membrane irritations and headaches often occurs. These symptoms can also occur during photochemical smog episodes.

Higher concentrations (> 50 ppm) and long-term exposure (> 30 min) can be fatal.

However, remaining in a room with these kinds of concentrations is nearly impossible.

Long-term effects of ozone exposure are not fully known, but we are warned to consider a decrease in lung capacity and lung diseases. To prevent the above-mentioned health risks, a maximum amount of ozone has been established for areas where one uses ozone.

This is the so-called Maximum Admitted Concentration, or MAC-value. This value describes the maximum concentration of a substance that a human can be exposed to for a given period of time.

For a normal working week of five days, eight hours per day, ozone has a MAC-value of 0,06 ppm (parts per million, or mg/L). For 15 minutes, the MAC-value is 0,3 ppm.

Ozone can be measured in ppm or ppb (parts per billion, or μg/L), according to various principles. With these measurements, the desired ozone concentration in a system can be monitored. When MAC-values are crossed near the ozone generator, an alarm will sound.

Ozone has a very distinctive smell, causing MAC-value violation to be noticed quickly.

Humans can stand a limited exposure of ozone, symptoms like dryness in the mouth and throat, coughing, headache and chest restriction can occur and nearby the lethal limits, more acute problems will follow in a higher concentration.

Limits:

* 0,06 PPM for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week (PPM = Parts Per Million)

* 0,3 PPM for maximum 15 minutes

RETROFIT

RETROFIT: AIR QUALITY AND SUSTAINABLE COMFORT

The market for Air Handling Units (AHUs) and Rooftops is growing significantly, supported by more demanding requirements as per Laws and Regulations.

The efficiency of the components used inside the ventilation systems is improving although there are still immeasurable opportunities to make the AHU system more efficient in its entirety; opportunities that depend on the choice of fans, cooling and heating devices, humidifiers, shutters and in particular filters.

The use of obsolete filter media implies year after year, a considerable waste of money linked to high energy costs; it requires considerable periodic maintenance interventions and produces high emissions in particular, a significant increase in CO2 concentration (for more information about the importance of CO2 reduction and how our active electronic filters can help you in this challenge, visit the page dedicated to CO2 at the following link "CO2 EMISSIONS’ REDUCTION"

Recent studies conducted in Sweden affirm that the air handling units and rooftops, among the components of a building, are the ones that have the greatest impact on energy level and that the choice of a poorly performing filter media greatly influences the percentage of consumption in KWh/Y.

What does retrofit mean and why is it important to do so?

RETROFIT means adding new technologies or functions to an existing ventilation system, extending its useful life, reducing the amount of periodic maintenance, improving its quality and efficiency from an energy point of view (energy requalification) and pollutant abatement.

The reasons for which a plant should be subjected to RETROFIT are therefore manifold.

To choose the FE/FEL SYSTEM active electrostatic filters produced by Expansion Electronic, designed specifically to be implemented inside air handling systems, corresponds to considerably simplifying the upgrade of existing ventilation units.

RETROFIT becomes simple because Expansion Electronic active electronic filters have the same dimensions as mechanical filters (according to the EN15805 standard) and their implementation does not require structural changes to the system in which they are installed.

In addition, the active electrostatic filters have been patented with incorporated electronics. The on-board electronics allow their installation in series through simple multipolar connectors and being completely resin-coated (waterproof) greatly facilitates maintenance (it is not necessary to remove the electronic circuit from the filters in washing operations). Complexity of installation and timing related to connections and electrical connections are greatly reduced. All this can be carried out, without particular difficulties, by an electrician.

It should be emphasized that an old ventilation system generates high operating costs due to an obsolete filtration technology which, in order to maintain its filtration capacities high, requires the replacement of the filter media at least 3 times a year as reported by the regulations in force (UNI EN ISO16890).
This is because, during operation, standard filtration systems considerably reduce their filtration capacity and as they become saturated, the pressure drops increase. High pressure drops translate into high energy consumption. Frequent replacements and high energy consumption are directly proportional to the increase in CO2 emissions.

Proceeding with the RETROFIT by implementing the active electrostatic filters of Expansion Electronic allows to increase the efficiency of the systems up to ePM1 95% (depending on the air crossing speed on the filters and the characteristics of the ventilation unit) and, at the same time, to reduce energy consumption up to 30% per year in medium ventilation systems. If the upgrade of the filtration system is combined with an upgrade of the fan (for example, replacement of a belt motor with a plug fan + integrated inverter) and optimization of the operating cycle, energy consumption can be reduced up to 80%.

Furthermore, the active electronic filters being made of 100% aluminum, a regenerable and recyclable material, guarantee a significant reduction in the management and maintenance costs of the units. Maintenance consists in a simple washing with water and detergent, and they do not need to be replaced. Their life is equal to that of the systems in which they are installed.

The RETROFIT of the standard filtration systems with the active electronic filters of Expansion Electronic is increasingly requested by customers operating in different sectors thanks to their ability to adapt to countless applications.

Advantages of RETROFIT with Expansion Electronic FE/FEL SYSTEM active electrostatic filters:

  1.  Certified filtration efficiency, high and constant over time
  2.  High and constant hygienic, antiviral and antibacterial effect
  3.  CO2 emissions reduction
  4.  Very low and constant pressure drops over time
  5.  Reduction of management costs (filter that can be regenerated by washing with water and detergent)
  6.  No replacement required
  7.  Energy consumption reduction up tu 30% per year

Sustainability

The great challenges that humanity has to face and the actual problems are high CO2 emissions, climate change, high energy costs, pollution and waste (in particular, plastic) created by individuals who live and work leaving residues of their own activity.

From the 70s, the progressive awareness of environmental issues has given rise to a wide debate on the future of the planet. If it is true that we can intervene on pollution with a greater use of existing technologies and materials and with a change in our life habits, it cannot also be said that the great problem of waste can be easily solved with the sole use of incinerators.

This debate has involved international organizations, opinion movements, governments and scholars and led to the concept of sustainable development: "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs" (Gro Harlem Brundtland, 1987).

Sustainable development combines the needs of economic growth with that of human and social development, quality of life and the protection of the planet from a long-term perspective of well-being.

The environmental, economic and social aspects of sustainable development integrate and mutually support each other in order to build a more equal, healthy and harmonious society for all.

For this reason, sustainability is increasingly becoming an integral and key part of our lives, our choices and our consumption, as a strategic element for a new model of development and unlike what it might seem, sustainability is not an anti- growth idea, but rather a model that pursues development in such a way that resources are respected and used wisely.

The three characteristics of sustainability

The concept of sustainability consists of three distinctive elements:
1. economy
2. society
3. environment

It is therefore possible to talk of sustainability only when there is a balance among these three elements; to protect the environment, promote widespread well-being and preserve economic growth and development.

The main goals of the sustainable model

The goal that this model wants to pursue is to preserve the resources of the planet on which we live and on which we depend.
In particular, the main categories of reference are:
· Sustainable energy: to abandon fossil sources and switch to the use of renewable energy sources
· Sustainability and equality: to allow everyone to have the same opportunities and the same minimum level of well-being
· Sustainable communities: to create communities that choose a lifestyle which is respectful of ecosystem resources
· Sustainable cities: to design new cities and redesign existing cities based on environmental and social criteria
· Sustainable consumption: to educate individuals to conscious and informed consumption
· Sustainable trade and industries: to make the use of resources more efficient

With a view to environmental and economic sustainability, Expansion Electronic undertakes, in the production of its electrostatic filters, to guarantee high filtration efficiencies, minimum electricity consumption, to use recyclable (100% aluminum) and renewable materials. The quality of material used, and the constructive geometry of our ESPs ensure a long life cycle of the product combined with a high reduction of CO2 emissionsdue to the non-production of environmentally harmful waste and to the less appeal to the use of fossil fuels to produce energy.

Electrostatic Filter - Electrostatic precipitator (ESP)

An electrostatic precipitator (ESP) is a filtration device that removes fine particles, like dust and smoke, from a flowing gas using the force of an induced electrostatic charge minimally impeding the flow of gases through the unit.

In contrast to wet scrubbers which apply energy directly to the flowing fluid medium, an ESP applies energy only to the particulate matter being collected and therefore is very efficient in its consumption of energy (in the form of electricity).

FE SYSTEM Electronic Filter
These filter works efficiently to capture up to 99% of airborne particles in your home and in residential sector and requires minimal maintenance. Simply remove the filter every 6-12 months, wash it and replace it. No replacement filters needed. Achieving cleaner air has never been easier.

Electrostatic Filter FE SYSTEM cells assure the highly effective separation of smoke, dust, and fine mist.
FEL SYSTEM is able to capture liquid substances, drips off the collection plates, and is collected in a recuperation tank. The oil separated here can often be reused. The second type forms a greasy, oily or encrusted deposit on the filter surface. Unsuitable filter types can quickly plug and become ineffective, leading to excessive costs associated with filter replacement and disposal. However, electrostatic precipitators never obstruct the air flow through the exhaust system.

“Blue Smoke” caused by the use of release agents gets separated effectively as well.
The electrostatic filters are characterized by the particularly robust design: frame and blades are made of aluminum, insulators in oil-resistant ceramics, optimized design for the separation of liquid or viscous substances.
These features make sure that the electrostatic filter is an economical and durable filter medium for many applications.

Certifications ISO

EXPANSION ELECTRONIC IS THE FIRST EUROPEAN MANUFACTURER THAT HAS OBTAINED THE UNI EN ISO 16890 CERTIFICATION ON ACTIVE ELECTROSTATIC FILTERS.

The introduction of the new global standard UNI EN ISO 16890, which classifies the air filters on the basis of their ability to retain the dispersed airborne particulate matter (PM10, PM2,5 and PM1), is generating a general revolution in the air filtration sector. It replaces the previous and obsolete EN 779:2012 standard (F7, F8, F9), anti-dust air filters for general ventilation.

EN ISO 16890 CERTIFICATION BROCHURE WITH COMPARATIVE TABLES AND FORMULAS

CHARACTERISTICS OF EN ISO 16890

• It replaces an existing standard from more than 20 years.
• The efficiency refers to the particle size of fine powders.
• The classification of a filtration element in a ePMx group is based on the minimum value of efficiency.
• New procedure for the electrostatic charge on the entire filter.
• Two different aerosols for the test: DEHS and KCL.

ADVANTAGES OF EN ISO 16890

• The filters will be more suitable for the real conditions of the desired application.
• Easier to correlate with international organizations such as WHO (World Health Organization) thanks to the same nomenclature.
• Possibility to calculate in an engineering way a filtration system.
• Improvement of the Indoor Air Quality.
• The norm will be valid worldwide.

The main difference between the previous EN 779 standard and the new EN ISO 16890, for the users, lays in the classification system of the HVAC filters efficiency.

In order to be classified as PM1, PM2,5 or all other PM size classes, a filter must prove a minimum efficiency of 50% compared to the class concerned. So, with this norm a filter can have up to four efficiency classes if it reaches minimum 50% of efficiency in the PM class (n).
In the end, for coarse filters, the new standard will include the filters that capture less than 50% of particles in the PM10 range, which will be called Coarse ISO and will show the performances of PM10 (for example PM Coarse 45%).
The medical-scientific community also recognizes the problem about micro-particulate and is paying special attention to PM 1, which is considered the most dangerous fraction of PM for human health. This new standard will therefore lead to an improvement in indoor air quality for the benefit of the health and well-being of people and production processes.

Thanks to their properties, the active electrostatic filters of Expansion Electronic offer very low pressure drops, constant during normal operating life. When the maximum degree of dirt is reached, the electrostatic filter can be maintained by washing with a special detergent that regenerates it and guarantees its normal functionality again.

The active electrostatic filter is a high precision filter composed of noble materials and is not intended for “disposable”. The return on initial investments is guaranteed in a few months thanks to:

• lower energy consumption that still guarantees a high Indoor Air Quality;
• lower maintenance costs;
• no filter replacement costs.

The FE SYSTEM filter range generates saving on energy costs of 30%.
The reliability and performance of Expansion Electronic filters, in fact, ensure low running costs throughout the entire life cycle of the plant.

------------------------------

REPLACED NORM

The European standard EN 779:2012 entitled “Particulate air filters for general ventilation” constitutes the relevant legislation for test and classification of filters used in general ventilation and way of test for measurement of performance of filter. This European standard refers to the filters for air purification which starting efficiency is less than 98% evaluate on polluting particles of 0.4 µm (micron).

The methodology described in the standard is based on a laboratory test procedure, with the aim of achieving reproducible and comparable results.

Filters are tested with a test volume flow between 0.24 m3/s (850 m³/h) and 1,5 m³/s (5400m³/h): since a filter’s operational behaviour depends on the volume flow in operation, the filter classes and all other test results from the test performed in accordance with EN 779:2012 always relate only to the test volume flow specified in each case. The principal results of the test are:

  • Gravimetric arrestance efficiency;
  • Efficiency on 0.4 µm particles;
  • Pressure drops;
  • Dust holding capacity.

The most significant change connected to this European standard – that was adopted in Italy in June of 2012 – is about the introduction of minimum efficiency for Fine filters (F7, F8 and F9) and the renaming of Fine filter classes F5 and F6 as “Medium”, that is M5 and M6.

The introduction of these minimum efficiencies represents a milestone in the filter industry as it raises the quality standards, improving the care of human health.

The European standard EN 1822:2012 is the reference standard on air filters with high and very high efficiency filters and with ultra-low penetration (EPA, HEPA and ULPA): this norm establishes a procedure for the determination of efficiency of filters using a method for the quantitative estimate of pollutant particles remaining after treatment with liquid aerosol. In this way it’s possible to obtain the classification of filters in a normalized way, facilitating the European commercial exchanges.

The methodology described in the standard EN 1822 permits to:

  • Asses the efficiency of filters, counting particles hold by the filter and size for which the efficiency of the filter is minimal. This size is known as Most Penetrating Particle Size (MPPS);
  • Check for the leaks of filter, local and total.

Compared to the previous standard published in 1998, efficiency classes H10, H11 and H12 have been renamed as E10, E11 and E12.

Following the enactment of this norm absolute filters are classified as follows:

  • EPA 10 – EPA 12 : Efficiency Particulate Air Filters
  • HEPA 13 – HEPA 14 : High Efficiency Particulate Air Filters
  • ULPA 15 – ULPA 17 : Ultra Low Penetration Air Filters

The technical national standard UNI 11254:2007 titled “Active electrostatic air filters for general ventilation – Definition on filtration efficiency” refers to the air filters intended for general ventilation, functioning through one or more electrostatic fields actively applied by means of a generator.

The content of this norm concerns:

  • Classification of filter following the evaluation of average efficiency on particles of 0,4 µm in diameter;
  • Complete description of test circuit, test method and procedures for qualification.

Health Benefits

When we walk in the open air we feel full of energy but, once back home, immediately we feel tired and heavy. The explanation for this is scientific and is due to the quality of air and the presence of negative ions. Ions are atoms that have lost or gained electric charge following episodes of splitting of molecules caused by the action of sunlight, radiation, winds and tides. When an atom acquires electric charge is defined as negative ion, when it loses it becomes a positive ion. What is currently most interesting for the researchers are the negative ions present in the oxygen, since they are present in many natural places, such as waterfalls, mountains, beaches or storms: in fact, as the positive ions are present in the atmosphere prior to a storm, negative ions are accumulated as a result of the storm. The abundance of negative ions has long been associated with improvements in mood and physical health. Research conducted in the last decade has begun to support the view that negative ions have a net positive effect on health.

One of the biggest clues to support this thesis comes from the link between catecholamine regulation and lifespan after depriving experimental animals of negative ions. First, researchers at the Goldstein and Lewin Dept. of Medical Research in Stahnsdorf, Germany isolated mice and rats in air-tight, sealed acrylic cases. Next, they filtered the ambient air to remove all negative ions from the sealed cases. Their research led to the discovery that a prolonged deficiency of negative ions led to an accelerated rate of death for the experimental animals. Examination of the animals led researchers to conclude that the results ‘‘strongly suggest that animal death is related to disturbances in neuro-hormonal regulation and pituitary insufficiency”.

Researchers at the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow discovered that negative ions are able to help protect the body from induced physical stress. When the researchers immobilized rats and exposed them to negatively charged air ions they discovered that the ions prevented the development of pathological changes characteristic of acute stress that are observed in untreated rats. The protective action of negative air ions was observed in all the experimental animals independently of their types of behavior.

British researchers at the Centre for Sport and Exercise Sciences in Liverpool exposed male subjects to negative ions and measured physiological responses, including body temperature, heart rate and respiration, while at rest and during exercise. Negative ions were found to significantly improve all physiological states, particularly during rest. Most important was the finding that negative ions are “biologically active and that they do affect the body’s circadian rhythmicity”.

Energy & Environment

Expansion Electronic considers the environment and its safeguard very important: we want to protect the quality of the air both in the external and internal places, guaranteeing high standard for the Indoor Air Quality, reducing or eliminating oil mists, dry fumes and general pollutants. This goal has been reached since 1981, respecting the environment and guaranteeing the best materials and technologies.

Expansion Electronic wants to respect the environment, since we strongly believe that is necessary to intervene in the depuration of the surrounding air without creating further pollution sources: for this reason, every product designed and built in our factories allows low environmental impact, since they are constructed with renewable and recyclable materials. In this way there’s no production of waste, which disposal would surely involve new polluting processes.

Furthermore, our products were realized in order to guarantee a life cycle which is much longer than the average of the other filters in the marketplace: their particular shape and the materials chosen for the construction allow to wash the electrostatic filter with a specific detergent when it’s full of pollution; this maintenance permits to obtain a clean, functional and efficient filter for at least ten years.

Choosing an active electrostatic filter is not only an advantage for the environment around us but also represents an advantage from an economic point of view as, thanks to the long life cycle of the product, it is not necessary to proceed with the purchase of a new filter as happens with classic filtration systems.

Further economic advantage is allowed thanks to the low power consumption of our products: in fact the exemplar design of the electrostatic filters allows to limit the pressure drops, which value keep itself constant in time. From this, it follows a remarkable saving, identifiable in a lower request of power for the operation of the Expansion Electronic electrostatic filter. In fact limiting the pressure drops means to reduce the resistance opposed by the electrostatic filter to the movement of the air flow avoiding the dust accumulation and, as a consequence, it’s translated into a lower request of electric power. Lower request of electric powe means less need to resort to fossil fuels which is directly proportional to lower CO2 emissions.

In addition to the low and constant pressure drops, Expansion Electronic guarantees products with high efficiency and constancy of filtration: thanks to the electronics incorporated in the filter and to the shape of the cells, we are able to offer products which filtration efficiency comes close to 100% during about all the life cycle of the filter, except to the moments in which the filter is full of dust.

Operating Principle

Operating Principle

The filtration with the active electrostatic system consists of a two-phase system thanks to which it’s possible to obtain the precipitation of solid or liquid particles contained in the air flow through the action of an electric field.

In a first stage, the air that passes through the FE System electrostatic filter is subjected to the action of an electric field with positive ionization, generated by a powered wire with high electrical voltage placed between two plates connected to ground: that field causes the liberation of positive ions, generating a phenomenon known as "crown discharge". The electrical charges that migrate between the electrode and the grounded surfaces collide with the air particles present in the air flow, giving to them part of their positive electric charge.

In the second phase, the previously loaded gaseous flow crosses the electric field of catchment: this is constituted by positively charged plates and by plates connected to ground, alternately arranged.

Thanks to that shape of the FE System electrostatic filter and to the participation of the electrostatic force, the solid particles contained in the air are attracted to the catchment plates, since they are negatively charged, and rejected by the positively charged plates.

Periodically, depending on the concentration of the pollutants, it’s necessary to wash the filter with a particular detergent, studied to guarantee a better performance and a longer life cycle of the product.

The efficiency of an electrostatic filter is very high, comparable to an absolute filter, since it’s usually used for fine particles with less than 1 micron in size. Typical pollutants are cigarette smoke 0.5 to 0.3 microns, oil vapors 1 to 0.2 m, PM10, PM2.5, PM1, etc. The electrostatic filter efficiency is measured and tested by taking as a reference the particles with 0.4 um in diameter average.

COMPANY

MORE THAN 40 YEARS HISTORY

In 1981, Giannantonio Nardotto had the idea of producing active electrostatic filters for integration inside air purifiers that could then be supplied to public places and guarantee a good indoor air quality to people. In fact, he understood the central role and importance of air purification for the growth of society, the technological development and the protection of the individual. It was a brave idea and many did not believe in the success of his project.

The active electrostatic filter he designed, represented the first step towards the establishment of a company that today, after more than forty years, stands out as a market leader in the production of electronic filters for air hygiene and purification.

It is incredible to think of the technological innovation of product and application that the company has had during its evolution. The company's core business, following the regulatory changes that have taken place worldwide, over the years, has focused more on the research and development of active electronic filters for implementation inside Air Handling Units and Rooftops. Thanks to perseverance and continuous innovation, Expansion Electronic is now able to provide 360 ° solutions for residential, industrial and food applications, responding to the growing needs of the market and the increasingly stringent international standards.

The company has always stood out for its innovative style, performances and products' quality. The search for the best materials and components, the efforts aimed at continuous technological evolution, with the aim of always guaranteeing maximum reliability in full compliance with international regulations and maximum comfort from a sustainable point of view, have been the key to commercial success and of the numerous international awards and certifications. The products made by Expansion Electronic continue to be totally produced in the factories in Italy, in the province of Vicenza, and are distributed all over the world with its own brand or with that of its international partners.

In more than forty years of history, the company's motto has always remained the one chosen by its founder: Better air quality, for a better quality of life.
